Is Your Farmall H Overheating? Check the Radiator

The radiator in your Farmall H tractor isn’t designed to last forever—after all, it’s over 50 years old! If you notice you’re having trouble keeping your engine cool, take some time to check out the radiator.

Here are the telltale signs that indicate you may need to replace it and how to go about doing it yourself.

Culprit #1: The Air Pump

The air pump helps circulate coolant throughout the engine, and if it’s not working properly, your engine can overheat. To check if the air pump is working, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Then, feel around the radiator hoses. If they’re hot, that means coolant is flowing through them. If they’re not, then the air pump isn’t working and needs to be replaced.

Culprit #2: An Imbalance in the Coolant

If your Farmall H radiator is overheating, it could be due to an imbalance in the coolant. If the coolant is too low, it won't be able to properly circulate and will cause the engine to overheat. You can check the level of coolant by opening the radiator cap and looking inside. If it's low, add more until it reaches the proper level.

Culprit #3: The Fan Belt

If your radiator isn't the problem, then it might be your fan belt. The fan belt is responsible for powering the fan, which helps to cool the engine. If the belt is loose or damaged, it can cause the fan to work less efficiently, leading to an overheated engine. To check the condition of your fan belt, simply remove the radiator cap and take a look. If it looks worn or damaged, it's time to replace it.

Culprit #4: The Fan Pulley

One potential cause of your Farmall H overheating could be the fan pulley. If the fan pulley is damaged or broken, it can cause the fan to not work properly. This can lead to your engine overheating, as the fan is responsible for cooling down the engine. To check if the fan pulley is the issue, take a look at it and see if there is any damage.

Keeping an eye on these signs can help prevent permanent radiator damage and keep your tractor running smoothly for years to come.
